Become an Umpire!
Here at Leinster Hockey Umpires Association, we are always looking for new recruits. No matter what age or level you think you are at, we would love to hear from you. Remember, every umpire out there was a complete beginner at some time (even Ray O'Connor was!).
To get people started, we have put togther a step by step process of how to became a top class umpire.
The best way to start umpiring from scratch is to get out and watch experienced umpires in action. This will give you the basics of how the rules are implemented and games are managed. Of course it is also advisable to read and understand the rules as laid out by the FIH (click here for latest edition). Once you feel you have a basic understanding of the rules, put yourself forward for some club games in the lower leagues. This will give you a great oppurtunity to learn the basics and understand how the game work's from an umpires point of view.
Once you feel you are ready for the next level, get in touch with us by sending your contact details to us by email. We will have one of our Umpire Assessors grade you over the course of 2 or 3 club games. These Assessors will give you great feedback on your game and how you can develop. They will also be able to put you in tougher games as you progress. This will give you crucial experience of different situations and pressures that can be expected with umpiring at a high level.
Once you and our Assessors feel you are ready for a higher standard and have the nessecary experience, our Appointment Co-Ordinator will begin assigning you to appropriate fixtures with Senior Umpires. These Senior Umpires will mentor you and provide feedback on your first offical league games. The LHUA promotes two way post game feedback between the umpires so both umpires can take away something from each game.
Throughout the season, grading forms are completed by LHUA Umpire Assessors on individual Umpires. These Assessors will provide positive and constructive feedback to help you develop your game. Continuous positive grading forms will facilitate your progress through the LHUA Grades and allow you umpire at the top division.
